Let your hands touch something that makes your eyes smile – a poem from Mirabai

A Hundred Objects Close By

I know a cure for sadness:

Let your hands touch something that

makes your eyes

smile.

I bet there are a hundred objects close by

that can do that.

Look at

beauty’s gift to us -

her power is so great she enlivens

the earth, the sky, our

soul.

- Mirabai, c. 1498-1550

The power of beauty is so great that it enlivens the earth, the sky, and our soul.  And chances are, you’re sitting right now at a banquet table of beauty, sufficient to sate your every hunger for delight, passion, inspiration, and pleasure.  But do you know it?  Or do you complain, instead, that your partner is supposed to do something different to fill the hole in your heart?

I know I sometimes take the latter path.  Never as yummy.

May your sadness be cured again and again by beauty’s gift to us.  And may that practice make your relationship simply the dessert in the feast of goodness that is your life.

Delighted to meet you, Michele, and to see all you’re up to here. Powerful, world-changing work.

As I read Mirabai’s poem I thought of the Anasazi beans in the colander this afternoon, rich reds and whites, that made me, literally, think, “Glory. Glory. Glory…”
